The Provost's Office recommended that third-year reviews be included as part of the dossiers of candidates for promotion and tenure.
During an earlier discussion, an Executive Committee member maintained that all annual reviews (not only third-year reviews) should be a mandatory part of the dossier. The member asserted that these reviews should not be construed as private personnel records, but as the department’s record of its annual advice to candidates. If a department’s Promotion & Tenure Committee and Departmental Consulting Group are to evaluate a dossier with respect to the department’s promotion standards, they need to know whether and how the department provided a consistent interpretation of the standards and the candidate’s progress toward meeting them.
The Executive Committee considered arguments both for and against the proposal, but decided against taking a formal position.
